Welcome on the Home Page of the Wiki to TEI 1.0 project.
Wiki2Tei is a converter designed to transform text formatted according to the rules used on some wiki sites such as Wikipedia, WikiBooks, WikiSource, etc. and to produce well formed XML documents based on the TEI model.
Wiki2Tei is written as an extension of the Mediawiki engine. It works with version 1.5 or 1.6 of Mediawiki: in order to make installation easier, the distribution provides a complete archive containing both the Mediawiki engine and the Wiki2Tei extension so that you do not have to worry about installing the proper version of Mediawiki. Detailed installation instructions can be found in the Installation section of the Wiki2Tei Help page.
Wiki2Tei is currently a project under development. It comes without any warranty (see the license terms). That said, it has been thoroughly tested and has proven quite reliable.
In order to run the Wiki2Tei program, you need a PHP interpreter (version 5.0 or higher) with XML support. This can be verified easily: if your PHP installation has XML support, the output of the command php -i contains the following line:
libXML Support => active
The Mediawiki software requires moreover the MySQL database engine. Wiki2Tei has been tested using MySQL 5.0, but the 4.0 and 3.0 series should work as well, according to the Mediawiki documentation.
Finaly, a few scripts of the Wiki2Tei distribution require some extra softwares:
You can find detailed information about how to install, how to configure, and how to use this software in the Wiki2Tei Help document.
Technical documentation about the TEI vocabulary used in the converted files can be found the .odd file tei4mediawiki.odd found inside the wiki2tei directory in the distribution.
There is a very simple demo site for the Wiki2Tei parser which can also be used as an online converter. It lets you enter, in a text field, the wiki text you want to convert: you can click on the Convert into TEI button to execute the conversion. The converted text is returned in another text field. The converter will also indicate if the converted document is well-formed and give a hint if it is not, generally due to a syntax error in the input wiki text.

Bugs can be officially reported via the Bug Tracker of the project. You can also address Feature Requests.
